Why the First 30 Days Matter
Puppies have a socialization window that closes around 14-16 weeks. What they learn in this window shapes how they respond to the world for the rest of their life. You do not need to teach everything in week one — you need to start right.
1. Sit
Sit is the gateway behavior. It is easy to train, it gives your dog something to do instead of jumping, and it builds the association between listening and good things happening.
2. Name Recognition
Before you can call your dog back, they need to understand their name means "look at me." Say the name once, reward eye contact, repeat. Keep it simple.
3. Crate as Safe Space
A crate trained dog is a dog who has somewhere calm to go. Start with short sessions and high-value treats. Never use the crate as punishment.
4. Loose-Leash Walking
Pulling is learned early and becomes a habit fast. Start leash training in the house before you are outside with distractions.
5. Leave It
Puppies put everything in their mouths. "Leave it" is a safety skill as much as a training skill. It is easier to teach early than to break the grab-and-run habit later.
